The 2008 5th Annual NLO Summer Program Welcomes 32 New NLO Alumnae to its Expanding Network

This intensive, six-day, summer residential
leadership training program, housed at Portland State University, is specifically designed to introduce Oregon's college women to opportunities for public leadership. Some highlights from this year's program included a tour of the state capitol with Governor Barbara Roberts (and meeting Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, Governor Kulongoski, and Rep. Sara Gelser) and nights playing Cranium in the residence hall with faculty-in-residence Judy Peppler (President, Qwest Oregon), Andrea Cooper (Campaign Services, FuturePAC, Alumna '06), and Sarah DeVries (Analyst, PNC Financial, Alumna '06).

Line Up for Leadership Fall Luncheon a Success!

Over 450 sponsors, alumnae, elected officials, business and nonprofit leaders, and community activists attended NLO’s first annual fundraising event to honor 4 Oregon Women Leaders (Senator Betsy Johnson, Teresa Alonso, Mary Wilcox, and Judy Peppler).

2 NLO Fall 2008 Internship Opportunities
We are seeking two interns to assist with a research project on women in elective state office in Oregon and to help set up and run a summit of women leaders and the media, scheduled for this Fall. These unpaid part-time positions will be for approximately 8 hours per week and accrue 4 credit hours for Fall Term. The positions will be located in our office in the Urban Studies and Planning Building at Portland State University, which is on the streetcar and several bus routes.

The College of Urban and Public Affairs at PSU will honor Sue Hildick for extensive and distinguished service to the college at our hooding
ceremony on June 13. Sue is the president of the Chalkboard Project, an independent
non-profit organization working to improve Oregon's K-12 public schools.  Sue was a  founding board member of our NEW Leadership Oregon program and has served as board chair for the past two years. Sue's tireless
efforts on the board have contributed greatly to the program's success. She helped to  raise NEW Leadership Oregon's visibility in the region, and contributed her expertise in  the program's critical early development stages. This year she is completing her final  term on the board.

March 18, 2008

State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced that  Jennifer Williamson, Public Affairs Manager at the Oregon Department  of Education and NLO Board member, was among 40 individuals selected for The Portland  Business Journal’s "40 Under 40" Award.  Award winners are  recognized as the 40 most accomplished, influential and civic-minded  young executives in Portland. At the Department of Education, Williamson leads legislative  affairs, internal and external communications, and the Oregon  Virtual School District.  Her primary role is
leading strategic communications and outreach for the Oregon Diploma initiative.

'06 Alumna Mai Le recently was awarded a one-year fellowship with the San Francisco city government. The program is called City Hall Fellows, and this is its inaugural year: http://www.cityhallfellows.org.

'07 Alumnae Aimeera Flint, fellow NLO alumnae Hannah Fisher ('07) and Debra Porta ('07) ran on a student government slate dedicated to diversity at PSU and won!- read more about Aimeera's run in the April 17th issue of the PSU Vanguard here!

 

'06 Alumna KJ Lewis has received an annual 2008 Orchid Awards for leadership in her profession and significant involvement in the community from the Portland Business Journal.

Congratulations to Vanessa Hernandez ('06) and Julie Caceres ('07) for awards for their high-achievment in academic and community affairs from the Chicano/Latino Scholarship Committee!
